Canterbury University Village - Sonoda

Offering self catered or catered accommodation; Sonoda is the ideal place for those groups or conferences wanting a quiet, peaceful but convenient location.

Central Location

Sonoda Christchurch Campus is located on Dovedale Avenue but set well back from the road so there is always a feeling of peace and quiet. Set in beautiful Japanese inspired gardens, Sonoda provides a perfect venue of a residential conference or seminar.

The main University of Canterbury Campus is a 7 minute walk away, and a 15minute taxi/car journey will take you to the central city business district and the Christchurch Convention Bureau

Getting Around

Sonoda is also very close to the Ilam shopping centre with its dairy, pizza shop, post office and others.

The Bush Inn Shopping centre, just a 10 minute walk away, has two supermarkets and loads of interesting shops as well as several ethnic restaurants. The bigger Westfield Mall, one of the largest shopping malls in New Zealand, is easily reached on the bus (or is a 20 minute walk for the more energetic). The mall has a cinema, food court, supermarket and over 140 shops!

Parking

The car parking for the Sonoda campus is located in front of the entrance to Sonoda Campus. There is car parking for 70 cars, please indicate your need for a carpark when checking into your accommodation or arriving for your conference.

Village Facilities

  • Village Gardens The village boasts stunning Japanese gardens inclusive of ponds with fish, it is a real tranquil, peaceful experience. The gardens are available for your group to enjoy during your stay.
  • Meeting Rooms The Village offers a unique meeting space within the Hinoki Seminar room. A boutique style set up the room accommodates for 60 guests Theatre Style or 30 Classroom/U-Shape. Conference catering can be arranged to suit your groups requirements.
  • Shared Spaces These areas are shared by all guests and can also be made available for private functions. Shared spaces are ideal for registrations or a chill out area where groups can watch a movie, play games, conduct group activities or relax with a book and a cup of coffee. Shared spaces equipped with a variety of technology, a pool table, games, music, furniture and a full kitchen for your enjoyment.
  • Tennis Court The courts are available for individual use and for group competitions or leisure games. Our friendly staff can assist you with your booking.
  • Laundry Within the village there is a laundry that is coin operated. The Laundry can be accessed by day and night and entry is only available to guest via security access.
  • Business Centre The Business Centre is equipped with a variety of technology and has computers set up in an ergonomically sound environment for your enjoyment. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is accessible by security access to all village guests upon request.
